given the time of year and that i'm still tweaking layouts and tee locations and course rules, and given that i want people to come check out the course and have fun with it, for the monthly only pros will play from the pro tees.

i will work on simplifying o/b and bunCR rules so that you dont need a rules sheet to play the course.

i will also work on tweaking hole layouts so that losing a disc either in the pond or in some of the waste areas isnt as likely.

everyone WILL play from the same tees. that makes sense so that everyone can gauge how they play against everyone else, which is important for the players and a designer on a new course.

thoughts on hole 17 rules? Player A clears risky OB lands in bounds. Throws decent second shot, misses putt, scores a 4.

Player B, throws OB off Tee. goes to medium tee. throws OB again. Goes to short tee, parks it, scores a drop in 4?'

Player B throws OB twice but scores par?

ive already changed the way i was intending to handle O/B areas because i recognized after our gathering the day after thanksgiving that there was an inherent unfairness with the way i had it.

areas that were previously defined as bunCR's with no penalty stroke (count the throw only) will now be treated as O/B as we usually know it - with a stroke penalty. they will throw their next shot from the next shortest tee. if O/B on a fairway shot you play from where it last was in-bounds. i will also move the shortest of the 3 tees on #17 back. otherwise a player throwing a fairway shot from near the white (middle) tee that goes out of bounds short of the beginner tee would play from where it went out while a player throwing a tee shot from the white (middle) tee would be able to play the next shot from the short tee, even if they only got halfway there with their errant shot.

like all courses i am involved with designing i initially have my own idea of how it will play and what sorts of creative situations i can create. but ultimately if there is unfairness or too much gimmickry it behooves me to make changes, otherwise i risk alienating players and folks wont come play these courses, which sort of defeats the purpose of designing the course in the first place.

i want feedback so i dont want players to be afraid of hurting my feelings......i want people to "play in my sandbox with my toys" and if the toys are ugly or broken i will end up playing alone. thats not much fun.

I didn't like the OB rule off 17's long tee...

Healy and I played on Sunday...

He was in the fairway off the tee, I went ob in the higher grass. I then took my next shot, throwing 2 from the wooded post all the way at the end of the cut grass. (I think this is how it was supposed to be played) We both layed up short of the OB before the island green and fnished with a 4 for the hole.

Thought it was unfair that I had such a bad shot off the tee and only ended up throwing my 2nd shot about 100-125 ft further back then his on the fairway.

Think from the pro tee it should be mando retee throwing 3.

I think Craig was thinkin of old 17 from up by Joe's house. The new hole is real cool especially if the rule is changed.

Some opinions:
I feel that on hole 4? (1st water hole?) The middle tee should be gone entirely and the green should be larger. Then if you miss you would go to the shortest tee (drop zone) throwing 3. In fact, that should be the case for both water holes (drop zone throwing 3)

Bednarz has a good point for 17. Re-tee throwing 3. How much do you wanna risk? I also feel that 17's green should be as large as the short grass already cut out. Just move the fake stones that far out.

18's fairway should also be as large as the short cut grass and should remain to the short basket.

Again, all my opinion.

Unfortunately I cant make it to the monthly, I'm running a Disc Golf Birthday Party/Clinic at Gaw for about 10-12 Manhattan Middle School kids!

Grow the sport!

no worries its gonna be crappy at noon. i think it was a good idea to postpone it. I wouldn't want to play in this rain and coldness. I like to be able to actually feel my hands when i play.

I'm stoked it was postponed. I can probably make this on my way to NYC for Christmas. Is it still a 12pm start?

the Monthly will be this sunday december 23rd at 10:00 AM

after consulting with my advisors, it was felt that this earlier start time would be a good thing because folks might have family obligations later in the day or want to check out some NFL action and we avoid any potential darkness issues this way too.

so 10:00 it is !!!! spread the word.

Thanks Dan for a great monthly! Courses is looking and playing great. The ace pot from the last monthly is actually $20.
$36 was the course funds I was not supposed to collect from the Wolfe monthly... #-o but its still good for the fund! :)

as i mentioned at the monthly i want to continually tweak the course for the sake of making it better from a variety of perspectives, including variety, fairness, challenge, scoring separation, etc.

one way to do that is to analyze hole-by-hole scoring from events like our monthly held this past sunday.
this isnt a perfect science. the 18 players in the monthly represented a wide level of skillsets. typically when i look at scoring for the purpose of establishing if a hole "works" i prefer to use scores from the skillset / rating of players a particular tee is primarily designed for. as an example, the pro tee for #17 that everyone played from is designed for pro players. if i use scoring data from players rated below 950, for example, i wont really know if that hole is well designed for pro players or not. (altho it was tragically obvious that the #17 pro tee is NOT meant for lesser-skilled players).

for you folks that salivate over numbers, here is the data from the monthly:

#1: 2.67 avg (8 2's; 8 3's; 2 4's)
#2: 3.61 avg (1 2; 9 3's; 4 4's; 4 5's)
#3: 4.33 avg (3 3's; 8 4's; 5 4's; 2 6's)
#4: 5.06 avg (2 3's; 6 4's; 7 5's; 1 7; 1 9; 1 10)
#5: 3.72 avg (3 2's; 5 3's; 6 4's; 2 5's; 2 6's)
#6: 3.50 avg (2 2's; 7 3's; 7 4's; 2 5's)
#7: 3.06 avg (2 2's; 13 3's; 3 4's)
#8: 3.39 avg (1 2; 9 3's; 8 4's)
#9: 2.78 avg (5 2's; 12 3's; 1 4)
#10: 3.56 avg (2 2's; 7 3's; 7 4's; 1 5; 1 6)
#11: 3.28 avg (1 2; 13 3's; 4 4's)
#12: 3.56 avg (1 2; 12 3's; 4 4's; 1 6)
#13: 5.39 avg (3 4's; 7 5's; 6 6's; 2 7's)
#14: 4.61 avg (3 3's; 7 4's; 4 5's; 2 6's; 2 7's)
#15: 5.11 avg (3 4's; 10 5's; 5 6's)
#16: 3.17 avg (4 2's; 9 3's; 4 4's; 1 6)
#17: 6.00 avg (3 4's; 7 5's; 1 6; 4 7's; 1 8; 1 9; 1 10)
#18: 6.00 avg (2 4's; 5 5's; 5 6's; 4 7's; 1 8; 1 9)

scoring average: 72.80
